The use of EVA in payload systems design is discussed. Also discussed is space crew training. The role of EVA in connection with the Large Space Telescope and Skylab are described.     Calculation of unsteady aerodynamics for four AGARD standard aeroelastic configurations

    Calculated unsteady aerodynamic characteristics for four Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research Development (AGARD) standard aeroelastic two-dimensional airfoils and for one of the AGARD three-dimensional wings are reported. Calculations were made using the finite-difference codes XTRAN2L (two-dimensional flow) and XTRAN3S (three-dimensional flow) which solve the transonic small disturbance potential equations. Results are given for the 36 AGARD cases for the NACA 64A006, NACA 64A010, and NLR 7301 airfoils with experimental comparisons for most of these cases. Additionally, six of the MBB-A3 airfoil cases are included. Finally, results are given for three of the cases for the rectangular wing

    Spin-dependent electron transport through the ferromagnet/semiconductor interface induced by photon excitation

    Circularly polarized light was used to excite electrons with a spin polarization perpendicular to the film plane in 3 nm Au/5 nm Co/GaAs (110) structures. At perpendicular saturation, the bias dependence of the photocurrent was observed to change in the range around 0.7 eV, corresponding to the Schottky barrier height. The photocurrent is observed to change significantly as a function of the magnetization direction with respect to the photon helicity, indicating spin-dependent transport between the semiconductor and the ferromagnetic layer at room temperature

The workshop comprised a series of technical sessions on materials themes, followed by theme panel meetings. Themes included materials, environmental parameters, and data bases; contamination; thermal control and protective coating and surface treatments; polymers and films; polymer matrix composites; metals, ceramics, and optical materials; lubricants adhesives, seals, fasteners, solar cells, and batteries. This document continues the LDEF Space Environmental Effects on Materials Special Investigation Group (MSIG) pursuit to investigate the effects of LEO exposure on materials which were not originally planned to be test specimens.     Due to its location and climate, Antarctica offers unique conditions for long-period observations across a broad wavelength regime, where important diagnostic lines for molecules and ions can be found, that are essential to understand the chemical properties of the interstellar medium.     Teaching statistics to medical students using problem-based learning: the Australian experience

    Background: Problem-based learning (PBL) is gaining popularity as a teaching method in UK medical schools, but statistics and research methods are not being included in this teaching. There are great disadvantages in omitting statistics and research methods from the main teaching. PBL is well established in Australian medical schools. The Australian experience in teaching statistics and research methods in curricula based on problem-based learning may provide guidance for other countries, such as the UK, where this method is being introduced. Methods: All Australian medical schools using PBL were visited, with two exceptions. Teachers of statistics and medical education specialists were interviewed. For schools which were not visited, information was obtained by email. Results: No Australian medical school taught statistics and research methods in a totally integrated way, as part of general PBL teaching. In some schools, statistical material was integrated but taught separately, using different tutors. In one school, PBL was used only for 'public health' related subjects. In some, a parallel course using more traditional techniques was given alongside the PBL teaching of other material. This model was less successful than the others. Conclusions: There are several difficulties in implementing an integrated approach. However, not integrating is detrimental to statistics and research methods teaching, which is of particular concern in the age of evidence-based medicine. Some possible ways forward are suggested

    MMTF: The Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter

    This paper describes the Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter (MMTF) on the Magellan-Baade 6.5-meter telescope. MMTF is based on a 150-mm clear aperture Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon that operates in low orders and provides transmission bandpass and central wavelength adjustable from ~5 to ~15 A and from ~5000 to over ~9200 A, respectively. It is installed in the Inamori Magellan Areal Camera and Spectrograph (IMACS) and delivers an image quality of ~0.5" over a field of view of 27' in diameter (monochromatic over ~10'). This versatile and easy-to-operate instrument has been used over the past three years for a wide variety of projects. This paper first reviews the basic principles of FP tunable filters, then provides a detailed description of the hardware and software associated with MMTF and the techniques developed to observe with this instrument and reduce the data. The main lessons learned in the course of the commissioning and implementation of MMTF are highlighted next, before concluding with a brief outlook on the future of MMTF and of similar facilities which are soon coming on line.Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, now accepted for publication to the Astronomical Journa
